Well, it is 2021 – we may have moved forward from the initial discomfort about being in a lockdown, but we are still living in unusual times. There are second waves of COVID-19 in certain parts of the world, there’s a fight for balance between the new and old normal, many of us have still not traveled and refreshed ourselves, and we are still grappling with the after effects of anxiety felt in the past year. 

What does all this mean for relationships this year – especially people in marriages who have had to be in close proximity 24/7 during the lockdown? What does love look like in the time of a pandemic? We thought it would be helpful to give our top 5 wellness pointers on how to keep the spark alive in your marriage even when you have spent most of your waking minutes with your partner during the lockdown.

1. Listen To Each Other

One of the best things you can do for anybody is simply listening and being present. Taking the time to fully understand what they are saying can make you aware of their wants and needs. So, if your partner has had a tough day at work, you can order their favorite takeaway, light a candle, and make it a special night even though it’s the middle of the week. These random acts of kindness can help you spice things up in your relationship.

2. Exercise Together

It’s been tough being indoors and sedentary for long periods of time. Take time out as a couple to plan outdoor activities – it could be as simple as taking a drive, a walk, or a bicycle ride together. Exercising as partners can help reduce stress and strengthen the positive connection. And of course, fresh air and sunlight can do wonders to lift your spirits.

3. Plan A Picnic or A Day at The Beach

For couples who have kids, it is even more important that you take time out for each other because managing children during a lockdown can create a whole new dimension of stress. If you have other family members to help you with your kids, plan a picnic at the park, or a day at the beach as a couple. Nature is a healing balm and can definitely help ease anxiety levels in the body.

4. Maintain Self-Care & Self-Love

While you have been taking care of your family’s needs during the lockdown, it is essential that you do not forget to take care of yourself. A self-care routine is essential to maintain physical and mental wellbeing – so make sure you eat nutritious food, wake up on time, sleep adequately, and get dressed every day. Also, go easy on yourself and take time out from family, work, and household chores to schedule a mid-day Yoga class or an online healing session if it makes you feel good.

5. Do A Fun Activity Together

Being spontaneous and fun can be a great way of keeping the love alive. Think about the interests that you share as a couple – for instance, if both of you are into music, make a playlist of your favorite songs and listen to it together. Plan spontaneous one-day trips or cook a nice meal together.

Many of us have felt the strain on relationships during the lockdown – so it is worth trying to be extra patient and loving with each other as well as ourselves. Make a commitment to switch things up and try something new for each other, as a couple. Doing this can remind you why you guys are together and that you still care about the relationship.
