Is Destination Addiction Stealing Your Joy?

My childhood friend was over at my place the other day and we were going through pictures from my trip to South Korea last year. We grew up together in Seoul where we spent 16 years of our early life. The trip was so special because I’d gone back after 18 years and I was showing her pictures of our old house, favorite spots, and restaurants that we often visited. We were reminiscing on the beautiful memories & talking about how amazing our childhood was.

But back then Seoul didn’t seem so appealing. I remember walking those same streets wishing I was older, so I could go off to college and live the fun life my brother and sister were living. I remember waiting to leave Seoul, so I could live in a more exciting city.

Looking back today, I realized like so many of us, I was under the illusion that happiness was waiting for me in my next place. I was attached to the idea of DESTINATION ADDICTION, a term I was introduced to recently by a friend.

At some point, we’ve all been victim to this destination addiction. The false attachment of thinking that when we reach our version of the promised land – marriage, children, money, career, bigger home, new city, we will finally feel much happier than we feel right now.

Of course, it’s only human nature to desire progress so that we feel like we are evolving and not being stuck in the same place. But every experience has its own beauty, and sometimes we miss out on what we have when we are so focused on arriving at the ‘next destination’ in life.

Getting what we want may give us temporary pleasure, joy, or even excitement. However, long-term happiness & peace of mind is rarely ever in the future.

NOTHING can make you happier than you are right now. Wherever you go, you carry your fears, your issues, and your limitations to wherever you are heading. If they haven’t yet, sooner or later, they will end up catching up with you.

At an intellectual level, we all hear about it, read about it, and know it. But our mind sometimes gets the better of us. So, let’s remind ourselves when we wake up every morning how special today is.

           – Today is the best day.

           – Today is exactly where I need to be.

           – Today will take care of tomorrow.

           – Today is where I internalize, process, resolve and embrace what I need to so that when tomorrow comes, I can actually feel like I’ve enjoyed the journey as much as the destination.


This simple Right Here, Right Now practice will help you get closer to yourself and really appreciate the present moment. And it will help you slowly but surely break the destination addiction and allow you to feel the joy of the present moment, wherever you may be.
