11 Relaxation Tips for Tired Bodies and Stressed Minds

Illuminations, is a Dubai-based well-being center offering a variety of different services based on holistic healing, mental well-being and personal growth.

Our goal is to empower you to detangle from the stressors of daily life and expand beyond your self-imposed limitations to create a happier and healthier life!

We introduce 11 Relaxation tips to destress from tired bodies and stressed minds!

1. Sit still and focus on your breathing:

1

Inhale slowly and deeply for eight seconds, then exhale slowly for eight seconds. Repeat this five or six times. It helps bring more oxygen to the brain.

2. Go for a walk around the block:

2

This will help you to breathe more deeply and improves circulation

3. Visualize:

3

Breathe deeply and think of a place that gives you comfort: a private beach, a garden, a cozy room.

4. Use Essential Oils:

4

such as lavender, geranium, sandalwood, neroli, and bergamot soothe and relax. Combinations of these oils can be used in either spray, roll-on or diffuser form.

5. Strike a deal with a trusted friend or co-worker to be stress-busting pals:

5
Whine! Bellyache about what's making you feel stressed. Get really dramatic and by the end you may both find yourselves laughing hysterically.

6. Divide a piece of paper into two parts:

6
On the right side, list the stressors you may be able to change, and on the left, list the ones you can’t. Change what you can, and stop fretting over what you can’t.

7. Be clear about your limits, and stop trying to please everyone all the time:

7
Trying to do everything is a one-way ticket to serious stress.

8. Stretching loosens muscles and encourages deep breathing, which in turn helps you to relax:

8
Muscles tighten during the course of the day, and when we feel stressed out, the process accelerates.

9. Soaking in a tub full of warm water can work wonders when you're feeling stressed:

9
The warm water relaxes you physically, loosening tight, stiff muscles. And, as a result, you relax mentally as well. Add some aromatic oils and some bath salts and your set.

10. It's a proven fact that soothing music can be relaxing:

10
The type of music you choose is entirely up to you. Buy a CD featuring soft, modern ballads, gentle classics, smooth jazz, or Nature inspired music. When you feel stressed, pop the music into the player and let the music carry you away.

11. Meditate:

11
focusing the mind on a word, phrase, or idea and letting go of other thoughts with an attitude of passive acceptance for relaxation or making positive changes.

How Are Yoga and Meditation Related?

1_copy1

Yoga is defined as the union of the mind, body and spirit, and hence the practice of yoga is a spiritual, mental and physical discipline. Many people associate Yoga as an exercise, however it is much more than that. Yoga is a way of life involving body postures, controlled styles of breathing and stillness of mind, in order to achieve a relaxed body, calm mind, along with several other scientifically proven health benefits.

Meditation is part of the mental yoga practice and one key element of Yoga, in order to achieve higher states of mental awareness and relaxation. A Yoga practice is rarely complete without the practice of meditation.

While our energies are focussed to do asanas (poses) in specific way, in that moment nothing goes in our mind- we are focussed and engaged. That’s what we also do in meditation. We focus our mind on our breath. The idea is to bring our mind to one state that is focussed. When all other thoughts stop and we experience a unity of mind, body and spirit.

In that way yoga and meditation are bringing us closer to the same state- that is oneness.
Yoga consists of eight fold path. To achieve nirvana – ultimate freedom, a yogi walks on this path.
1. Yamas (Don’ts or Restraints)
2. Niyamas (Do’s or Observances)
3. Asanas (Exercises and poses)
4. Pranayamas (Breathing exercises and techniques)
5. Pratyahara (Control of the senses)
6. Dharana (Concentration)
7. Dhyana (Meditation) and
8. Samadhi (A super-conscious state)

2_copy1

Meditation is an important state to achieveSamadhi- or union with divine. Buddha achieved Samadhi while he was sitting in lotus pose or padmasan and meditating.

Inorder to achieve a goodmind body connect we need to communicate at the level of both mind and body. The principle of yoga, the asanas or poses along with meditation and a yogic lifestyle has answers to our existential questions. We just need to be as true to our selves and our bodies as we can.

How Meditation Impacts Brain?

1_copy

Millions of people practice meditation. The techniques of meditating may vary but the purpose remains same- peace, love, joy, healing, tranquillity, spiritual growth. Because of its popularity a lot of research is being conducted to study the impact of meditation on our bodies, specifically our brain. Sara Lazar is a neuroscientist at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. She researched how meditation impacts our brain. The results of her study surprised her along with other researchers.

They did a comparative study on long term meditators and people who don’t meditate and compared their brains scans.

3_copy

First thing noticeable was that the grey matter in the insula, sensory regions and frontal cortex was higher in meditators which means their senses were very sharp, memory and decision making skills better compared to non-meditators.in fact the size of cortex and its grey matter in 50 year old meditators was equivalent to as much as a 25 year old would have whereas we all know that our cortex shrinks and grey matter reduces with age as well. Overall the research identified significant brain regions to be more active, less stressed, calm, better memory and executive functions and aging to be slower. It also showed dense grey matter in regions of hippocampus, an area of brain associated with learning and memory, as well as in other areas associated with self-awareness, compassion, and reflection.

There are many other researches being conducted on the impact of
meditation on physical body.

We can safely say that meditation helps in reduced stress levels, better work- life balance, improved emotions, and better quality of life. Improved connection with self and others, deeper understanding of life. Meditation is a safe remedy for stressed based issues according tocardiologist Herbert Benson, MD, founder of the Mind/Body Institute at Harvard Medical School's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

4
Meditation brings about a state of relaxation which in turn helps decrease metabolism, lowers blood pressure, and improves heart rate, breathing, and brain waves. Other researches shows that meditation produces long-lasting changes in the brain activity in areas involved in attention, working memory, learning, and conscious perception. There are many types of meditation practices available but the foundation of each one stays the same- focussing on breath, calming the mind and body and going into a deep sense of relaxation. Through entering this state of relaxation we can achieve many beautiful things inside and outside us. Let’s all venture into this beautiful area of meditation and find outwhich type of meditation suits us.

How to Cope with Panic Disorder?

1

Sandy was diagnosed with panic disorder. When she came to me she reported feeling extremely scared to leave her house with the fear of getting an asthmatic attack. She had completely stopped going out alone and being a doctor by profession it was becoming increasingly difficult for her to commit to her hectic schedules. Her therapy included counselling, hypnotherapy, reiki and meditation techniques. It took us 7 sessions and she was relieved of her panic disorder but surprisingly she was also healed of asthma. She continued using the meditation technique which I taught her and she was able to heal her asthma by herself with that.

Panic disorder, fears & phobias comes under the psychological diagnosis of anxiety disorders. The common symptoms of these are presence of a fear which is becoming unmanageable. A standard treatment plan would include counselling and relaxation techniques which are taught to a person over the course of therapy. In addition, techniques like hypnotherapy and other energy based approaches helps to fasten the healing process.

When a person comes to a therapist with symptoms of anxiety disorder, they project a lot of fear and doubts in the therapeutic process. Feelings of discomfort surfaces as they realise they might have to face their fears eventually as a part of healing. But when you do face your fears slowly, step by step, you start feeling comfortable and realise you are free eventually.

2

Acknowledging your issue is the first step you take to free yourself, seeking a therapist being the second step.

Some practical steps that you can take in event of panic symptoms are mentally affirming the word “Relax” to yourself. Stretch your arms as if yawning deeply which is a state of relaxing. Some deep breathing in and breathing out from your mouth also helps. Technically you have to trick your mind that you are relaxed which is an opposite state of panic and anxiety. Meditation is also an amazing approach as the more stress free you get the better chances of you healing out of the anxiety issues. Until you seek a therapist to resolve the issue completely, you can try these techniques

Depression: What You Need to Know

d-1

Depression is one of the less discussed but rather serious issue in present day’s scenario. Ever felt you have to force yourself out of your bed every morning and do things that no longer interest you. Feeling that you have to put up a smiling face and face the world when inside all you want to do is scream or stay alone in your room.

If you are feeling sadness more frequently and very little things truly makes you happy then talking about this to a therapist is a good idea right now. Depression on the surface looks to be a simple mood issue but it’s like a demon which if left unattended consumes every bit of sunshine from your mind and you feel enveloped in a blanket of sadness.

d-2
Depression can affect people at any age group. From kids who are 8 years old to teenagers, adults, older adults, it can affect anyone regardless of age and gender. For some people the cause of depression is known while for a lot others even the cause is unknown to them.

Depression requires professional therapy from a therapist and also social support. Some people would recover from depression sooner than others. Everyone comes with a unique story and that’s why the approach how we heal them varies.

d-3

In my experience of working with depression, I witnessed old traumas surfacing which once healed, helped people move on and start feeling happier again. Some people had to free themselves of unresolved guilt and regrets, while others had to free themselves of a long unresolved grief. As every person comes with a different story, every therapy approach changes to identify, explore and heal them.
The job of a therapist is to support the person who is seeking their help and eventually empower them enough for them to be on their own with…

At Illuminations, Dubai, seek support to combat depression. Notice your kids and other family members. If you see signs of depression, please connect to us and seek guidance as we are here to help and support you.

What Does Wellness Really Mean?

Wellness is a popular term we hear and speak in every other conversation these days. A lot is written and discussed about wellness too; but what does it really mean?

There are many ways to describe this concept and there is really no right or wrong explanation, but I will share with you how I look at and experience wellness in my life.

122

Wellness is more than counting calories or going to the gym. It is a beautiful space that moves you into a state of balance – physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

To experience wellness in and around you, it is important become aware of oneself.

Begin by observing your thoughts and actions for a period of time; not to change or judge yourself but simply to understand where you stand in your current space.

Once you are aware and acknowledge your existing patterns of thoughts and habits; use your emotional scale as an inner guidance to scale or categorize your experiences on a daily basis under simple feelings of joy, sadness, anger, excitement, love, hate and so on.

Becoming aware of your emotional grid gives you the power and choice to shift yourself from dense emotions like fear anger to joy love by focusing on good feelings thus arresting the negative feelings in early stages.

1133
The formula is simple but you need to stay committed to honor and accept your feelings on an ongoing basis without judgments and be willing to shift any low feeling to a high vibrating one as soon as you catch your emotional meter dipping!

Create your own customized feel-good list that will keep you aligned to the feelings of joy and love.  You can start by listing all those things that brings a smile to your face and keeps your emotions light. Include anything to the list from- spending time with family or pets, cooking, meditating, cycling, swimming, dancing, journaling and the list can go on;  and everyday spend  mindful time doing a few things that’s on the list; Whenever your emotional meter experiences a low or dip, simply  chose something that’s on your list to gently and naturally lift your emotions.

As you do this regularly you will begin to   feel the balance and wellness in every sphere, experience and relationship in life begin to soar!

Embrace Your Inner Child

Notice how children often exuberate a level of confidence and zest for learning new things- qualities we as adults long for? With their charming innocence and beautiful state of wonder, children remain dedicated in their quest to knowledge until somewhere down the line, hardships of life alter their perceptions and the initial flame that burns within all of us is diminished as we grow into our adulthood and take charge of the responsibilities. Why We Shout in Anger - A Saints Perspective

We Loved This Story we read so thought we would share it with you:

A Hindu saint who was visiting river Ganges to take bath found a group of family members on the banks, shouting in anger at each other. He turned to his disciples smiled and asked.

'Why do people shout in anger shout at each other?'

Disciples thought for a while, one of them said,'Because we lose our calm, we shout.'

'But, why should you shout when the other person is just next to you? You can as well tell him what you have to say in a soft manner,'asked the saint

Disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the other disciples.
Finally the saint explained, 'When two people are angry at each other, their hearts distance a lot. To cover that distance they must shout to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to shout to hear each other to cover that great distance.

What happens when two people fall in love? They don't shout at each other but talk softly, Because their hearts are very close. The distance between them is either nonexistent or very small...'

The saint continued,'When they love each other even more, what happens? They do not speak, only whisper and they get even closer to each other in their love. Finally they even need not whisper, they only look at each other and that's all. That is how close two people are when they love each other.'

He looked at his disciples and said.

So when you argue do not let your hearts get distant, Do not say words that distance each other more, Or else there will come a day when the distance is so great that you will not find the path to return.

Meditation For Beginners

If you are a novice in the practice of meditation, the very thought of sitting still for an extended amount of time can seem daunting. Add to that the whole stress level of trying to ‘shut down your thoughts’ while trying to visualize the beautiful ethereal scene we are often guided to imagine. Do you often find yourself at a loss of a response whenever someone brings up the benefits of meditating and how wonderful and uplifted they feel?

Meditating regularly has many scientifically proven benefits ranging from improved concentration to better quality of health. Any one can avail these benefits and take the experience of meditating from awful to awesome with these simple steps!

1) Take your pick!

Contrary to popular beliefs, there are several different meditation techniques ranging from mindfulness, transcendental to guided visualization and even moving meditation. There is of course a bit of trial and error method involved in the process of finding the right pick for you, but having patience and perseverance is the key to definite success. So do your research and keep an open mind to all the possibilities out there.

2) Stretch First

Stretching loosens the muscles and tendons allowing you to sit (or lie) more comfortably. Additionally, stretching starts the process of “going inward” and brings added attention to the body. Stretching also helps the body enter a more relaxing state that initiates a quicker healing process, hence helping you achieve higher potential of the benefits.

3) BreatheIn, Breathe Out

Instead of focusing on ‘shutting your mind off’, shift your attention to your breathing pattern. Become conscious of each breath that enters and leaves your body often moderating the speed of inhales and exhales with a mental count. Let your natural thoughts come and go and do not resist the flow of thoughts. Saying an affirmation in your mind is of great help and adds a sense of purpose to your meditation!

4) Discipline and Practice Make Perfect!

Create a quite space around your house where you can meditate on a regular basis without any disturbances. Adorning this area with scented candles, incense and fresh flowers adds to the appeal of meditating. Pick a fixed time of the day to meditate and stick to it! The more discipline you bring into the practice of meditation, the greater rewards you can avail. And soon you will be on your way to a life of fulfillment and happiness that comes along with making the practice of meditation an imperative one!
