What’s the Connection Between Addiction and Mental Disorders?

Comorbidity has been studied for many years to understand how two or more issues in mental health might be connected. There are many aspects to understand why we often find people diagnosed with mental disorders are also into some form of addiction. Or even how while working with an addict we identify prevalence of a mental disorder. Studies attempts to understand if people with mental health issue have natural tendency to seek artificial state of consciousness through intake of drugs? Are they doing drugs to make symptoms more bearable? Often times we notice a case of drug abuse, upon further therapy and counselling identify that they are dealing with some undiagnosed, underlying mental health issue.

 Is drugs a way to deal with mental health symptoms which a person is not able to make sense of as the issue is undiagnosed, unidentified?

If that’s the case we might have to change the way how we view addictions….we have to check a person for depression, anxiety or other mental health issues. Maybe the key to help them is to understand what are they dealing with and what are they trying to run away from, what they are trying to manage with drugs or other addictions.

The way society still views mental illness might be a big reason why lot of people would not want to seek help by getting a diagnosis. Stigma can be difficult to carry which society has attached with mental illness. People go many years sometimes undiagnosed managing symptoms of mental illness by drugs, tobacco, alcohol etc. instead of seeking therapy.

We need to spread awareness about mental illness, change the way we deal with it as a person, as a family, as a friend. Encourage therapy for people who might be dealing with an underlying mental illness and overall be supportive.

A lot of people who do seek therapy and social support manage to live a good life, addiction free, as aware, responsible members of society.

How to Cope with Panic Disorder?

Sandy was diagnosed with panic disorder. When she came to me she reported feeling extremely scared to leave her house with the fear of getting an asthmatic attack. She had completely stopped going out alone and being a doctor by profession it was becoming increasingly difficult for her to commit to her hectic schedules. Her therapy included counselling, hypnotherapy, reiki and meditation techniques. It took us 7 sessions and she was relieved of her panic disorder but surprisingly she was also healed of asthma. She continued using the meditation technique which I taught her and she was able to heal her asthma by herself with that.

Panic disorder, fears & phobias comes under the psychological diagnosis of anxiety disorders. The common symptoms of these are presence of a fear which is becoming unmanageable. A standard treatment plan would include counselling and relaxation techniques which are taught to a person over the course of therapy. In addition, techniques like hypnotherapy and other energy based approaches helps to fasten the healing process.

When a person comes to a therapist with symptoms of anxiety disorder, they project a lot of fear and doubts in the therapeutic process. Feelings of discomfort surfaces as they realise they might have to face their fears eventually as a part of healing. But when you do face your fears slowly, step by step, you start feeling comfortable and realise you are free eventually.

Acknowledging your issue is the first step you take to free yourself, seeking a therapist being the second step.

Some practical steps that you can take in event of panic symptoms are mentally affirming the word “Relax” to yourself. Stretch your arms as if yawning deeply which is a state of relaxing. Some deep breathing in and breathing out from your mouth also helps. Technically you have to trick your mind that you are relaxed which is an opposite state of panic and anxiety. Meditation is also an amazing approach as the more stress free you get the better chances of you healing out of the anxiety issues. Depression: What You Need to Know

Depression is one of the less discussed but rather serious issue in present day’s scenario. Ever felt you have to force yourself out of your bed every morning and do things that no longer interest you. Feeling that you have to put up a smiling face and face the world when inside all you want to do is scream or stay alone in your room.

If you are feeling sadness more frequently and very little things truly makes you happy then talking about this to a therapist is a good idea right now. Depression on the surface looks to be a simple mood issue but it’s like a demon which if left unattended consumes every bit of sunshine from your mind and you feel enveloped in a blanket of sadness.

Depression can affect people at any age group. From kids who are 8 years old to teenagers, adults, older adults, it can affect anyone regardless of age and gender. For some people the cause of depression is known while for a lot others even the cause is unknown to them.

How the Planets Influence Our Personality

Every planet in the solar system and beyond, has its own consciousness. When I say consciousness I mean – energy signature that is distinctly its own. For example Saturn is or exudes the consciousness of determination, hard work, perseverance, fear and treachery.

Now you may ask how it is possible to be the energy of perseverance and also of fear. The answer to that is that both perseverance and fear are of the same energetic essence, vibrating at different frequencies. When one succumbs to circumstances, it creates fear… when one confronts circumstances, it creates perseverance.

Similarly every planet has its own energetic essence. Mercury is the consciousness of curiosity, intelligence, innocence, confusion and communication. Venus is the consciousness of relationships, Mars is the ability to act in the moment, passion, restlessness and enthusiasm. Jupiter is the energy of righteousness, dogma, hope and wisdom. Moon is feeling consciousness and Sun is soul power.

What is important to understand here is that all these planetary energies exist within each and every one of us because simply put, we are star dust in motion. Whatever is out there in the cosmos is also in here within each and every one of us. The planets come alive through the conscious human being.

Consciousness is expressed through the feelings and emotions experienced by us through our awareness. The more we grow, the more aware we are of our own highest potential, the more we vibrate from the higher frequencies of the planetary forces within us and then the consciousness of Saturn moves from fear to determination, Mercury moves from confusion to intelligence, Mars from restlessness to passion, Venus from insecurity to freedom in relationships etc.

It is important to understand that the planets and stars – what we refer to as Nakshatras in Vedic Astrology, are all living beings or intelligent forces of consciousness that are transforming and evolving through us. When I say this I mean the human race. Every planet and every Nakshatra (there are 27 that are featured in Vedic Astrology) in your chart, create the story of your life – a platform from where you can grow and explore your highest potential. When you understand these energies within your chart and hence within yourself you are able to live your life more fully… you are able to fulfill your purpose.

Stop Being Selfish - Live Your Purpose!


Have you ever had that nagging feeling that you are supposed to be doing something else? Something that is only you can do? And have you ever then, doubted yourself for having had this feeling... rubbished it by reminding yourself that you were just another ordinary person who had no business thinking about being special in any way?

                             
Well if the above is true for you then let me tell you:

                           Selfish

Selfish? You may ask and my answer to you is yes again – STOP BEING SELFISH.

Each one of us is a unique spark of creation, special, perfect and complete. In the journey of our life, it is our job to simply find our own authenticity and then unabashedly live it. Expressing our TRUTH is our life purpose and we each express our truth in different ways.

It is through the expression of our uniqueness that The Universe/God expresses itself and this expression of our truth is always beneficial to mankind.

Let me elaborate just to confuse you further…

When you experience any kind of difficulty in your life, it solely exists to stir you in the direction of your truth so that through that seemingly difficult situation, you are able to blossom and bloom into the purest version of yourself. Karma is the teacher who knows your potential and will nudge you through lifetimes to help you to shine. Sometimes well, oftentimes this nudging can feel like a punishment, like a wormhole through which there seems to be no way out and then people seek therapy to forgive, to release, to accept and this is all ok – in fact it is great to be able to understand your story as it will help you to get in touch with your truth. But I must say that getting lost in your story is futile and sometimes even detrimental to your progress because ultimately we as human beings are givers, here to give and express. It is through the authentic giving of ourselves that we can find lasting joy and contentment.

So if you are reading this then maybe it’s time to think. Rise above your story because your story is just that – a story. What is real is you – you are here to do something unique, special and authentic. The truth my dear friend is that the world needs you to live your divine life purpose. It is time for you to wake up and smell the aroma of your highest potential. Investigate into your authenticity.

I often encourage people to explore Astrology, not because it can be used to predict the future – NO because nobody can do that, but because Astrology is a great way to meet your true self. It is like looking at a metaphysical photograph of yourself and a photograph does not lie. You may not like what you see, but the photo will show you the truth. Your birth chart is the divine blueprint of what you intended to express is life journey. Everything charted out to help you to express your truth and highest potential not through fear but through love. The hardships the joys, the highs and the lows, all to help you to come into your authenticity and live your purpose.

2016 – The Year of the Fire Monkey


The Year of the Wood Goat is slowly coming to an end and on February 4, 2016 we will be entering the Year of the Fire Monkey.

In the Chinese calendar system, this particular year will be dominated by two elements: Fire and Metal. According to the cycle of birth and destruction, which is one of the cornerstones of Chinese Metaphysics and everything related to Feng Shui, Fire is in direct clash with Metal, as it has the ability to destroy (“melt”) Metal. This indicates a year of disharmony and somewhat explosive tempers. However, due to the playful and very straightforward nature of the Monkey, arguments and conflicts tend to be resolved rather quickly and compromises abound.

The Monkey is the clash animal for the Tiger. So, while those of us born in the year of the Monkey will have a great year ahead, full of life-changing opportunities, Tiger people might want to tread lightly and just go with the flow this year. Especially those Tiger people who like to engage in sports are more prone to sport injuries and accidents than others. Tiger and Monkey are both so-called Traveling Stars, and together they form a “Horse Carriage Clash” – an indication for a higher risk of traffic and road-related accidents.

In terms of health, a Fire-Metal clash is often an indicator for respiratory issues, gastric and intestinal problems, as well as illnesses involving the prostate.

When it comes to the Feng Shui of your residence or office, the Year of the Monkey will bring particular challenges to the Northeast sector, where the #5 Yellow Calamity Star takes residence. Generally regarded as a rather negative Star, the #5 Yellow finds itself in a very rare combination this year, which enhances its harmful energies. If you happen to have your bedroom or study/desk in the Northeast, it would be highly advisable to move away from this sector of the house (until February 3, 2017). It would be safest to keep this area of your home or business as undisturbed and quiet as possible.

The Wealth sectors for the Year of the Monkey reside in the Southwest, East and Southeast. To take full advantage of the favorable energies residing in these sectors, either sleep or work there. Alternatively, try to spend as much time as possible in these areas of your residence or office, to keep the energies active.

What Does Wellness Really Mean?


Wellness is a popular term we hear and speak in every other conversation these days. A lot is written and discussed about wellness too; but what does it really mean? 

There are many ways to describe this concept and there is really no right or wrong explanation, but I will share with you how I look at and experience wellness in my life.

Wellness is more than counting calories or going to the gym. It is a beautiful space that moves you into a state of balance – physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.   

To experience wellness in and around you, it is important become aware of oneself.   

Begin by observing your thoughts and actions for a period of time; not to change or judge yourself but simply to understand where you stand in your current space.  

Once you are aware and acknowledge your existing patterns of thoughts and habits; use your emotional scale as an inner guidance to scale or categorize your experiences on a daily basis under simple feelings of joy, sadness, anger, excitement, love, hate and so on.

Becoming aware of your emotional grid gives you the power and choice to shift yourself from dense emotions like fear anger to joy love by focusing on good feelings thus arresting the negative feelings in early stages.

The formula is simple but you need to stay committed to honor and accept your feelings on an ongoing basis without judgments and be willing to shift any low feeling to a high vibrating one as soon as you catch your emotional meter dipping!  

Create your own customized feel-good list that will keep you aligned to the feelings of joy and love.  You can start by listing all those things that brings a smile to your face and keeps your emotions light. Include anything to the list from- spending time with family or pets, cooking, meditating, cycling, swimming, dancing, journaling and the list can go on;  and everyday spend  mindful time doing a few things that’s on the list; Whenever your emotional meter experiences a low or dip, simply  chose something that’s on your list to gently and naturally lift your emotions.  

As you do this regularly you will begin to   feel the balance and wellness in every sphere, experience and relationship in life begin to soar!

2 Powerful Exercises to Love & Celebrate You!


It’s easy to get caught up in our busy lives with routines that defines our day and in many ways our life. Its also not uncommon for many of us to start identifying ourselves with what we do as part of our daily lives; “ I’m an entrepreneur” “ I’m a home maker” “ I’m a doctor, lawyer, fulltime mom”…and the list goes on.

But sometimes in the midst of this action we can find ourselves a little lost perhaps even in a place where we don’t recognize or feel one with who we really are! The sliver lining to this heaviness is the opportunity to realign and celebrate yourself.

I will share with you two simple exercises that can empower you to be the fullness of who you are!

1.Positive Vibration – This will take 5 minutes, get into bed and start off with the positive things you experienced in the   morningandslowlynarrowin to the present moment  “ Thank-you for the support, the people, the coffee, the body, the breathing, the bed the pillow….” everything that you can be grateful for -acknowledge it getting closer and closer to the present moment. 2. Sacred–time – Set aside 15-30 minutes everyday for yourself with no agenda; just a window to do whatever you feel like at that time. Honor yourself in that moment, feeling the pulse of who you are – don’t plan anything for this special time- let it unfold as you align with your inner being.

The Power of Living in the Present!

Life as we know is all about choices and one of the best choices that you can make is the choice to live in the Present.

But, what does 'Living in the Now' really mean? To understand it very simply it is the ability to be completely aware and experience life as it unfolds every moment without getting tangled in the past nor being worried about the uncertainty of the future.

Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? So, with a strong desire and some simple exercises you can train your mind to be in the Now.

The power of the breath is known to all of us, so I will share with you 2 simple Breathing exercises to initiate this process.

Spend a few minutes everyday to practice this and gradually see the technique and effects become a way of your life.

1) Cleansing Breath: A beautiful way to release negativity like anger, stress and frustration. Just close your eyes, and gently breathe in through the nose inhaling positive energy and blow out through the mouth exhaling negative energy or emotions. Repeat this cycle 21 times and then return to normal breathing.

2) Awareness to Breath: As you resume to your natural breathing pattern, feel the breath moving in and out of the body and become completely aware of this process. Every time you notice that your mind wanders off or starts to judge your experience very gently with compassion direct it back to the breath. Enjoy this process for a few minutes till you feel comfortable and it will start getting easier as you make it a regular practice.
